Research Activity

Synthesis of single crystals under weak hydrothermal conditions

Synthesis of salt-like compounds of the first series of transition metals with emphasis on selenites, sulfates and selenates of divalent cobalt; furthermore Ni(II), Cr(III), Mn(II), Mn(III), Mn(IV), etc.

Crystal structure and crystal chemical studies of minerals and synthetic inorganic solids

Structural investigations using single crystal X-ray diffraction;
ab-initio structure determination from powder X-ray diffraction data;
Crystal chemistry of Co(II) ion in oxygen coordination - question of Jahn-Teller effect in Co(II); crystal chemical investigations on series of isotype compounds of transition metals, e.g. kieserite group, vivianite group, synthetic isotypes of Co(II) and Ni(II).

UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy of minerals and synthetic inorganic solids

Microscope absorption spectroscopy on compounds of transition metal ions with d3 and d7 electron configuration:
Cr(III), Mn(IV), especially Co(II). Interpretation and calculation of d-d; transition energies in non-cubic symmetries.Question of possibility of quantitative correlation of polyhedral distortions with details in spectra. Derivation of parameters of interelectronic d-d repulsion in crystal fields of so far not investigated groups of materials (selenites, selenates).
